Ankle Pain

Problems involving the ankle may be acute (sudden onset) or chronic (an ongoing problem). Acute problems are likely to be the result of an easily identifiable injury or episode which may need further immediate tests and appropriate emergency treatment. Although the injury may simply be accidental, some sports people are particularly prone to certain problems due to the structure of their feet – for instance ankle sprains are often related to high arched feet. The use of individually prescribed orthotics in can help stabilise the foot, making injury less likely.

The area behind the ankle (the retrocalcaneal area) can be affected by acute conditions such as an Achilles tendon rupture, but may also be the site of chronic conditions such as tendonitis, bursitis or Sever’s disease in the growing child. Appropriate treatment by a podiatrist can help address the symptoms associated with such conditions.

A biomechanical assessment is needed to determine whether therapeutic insoles will help you. Please see the the treatments tab to find out what a biomechanical assessment involves.
