Shin Pain

Many sports people, particularly runners, experience exercise induced lower leg pain which on occasion may be severe enough to prevent further activity. Shin pain is often referred to as 'shin splits' although in reality this is a general term describing pain which may have a number of different causes. Some of the causes which can be explained in more detail at your appointment are:-

  • Medial tibial stress syndrome

  • Tibial / fibular stress fracture

  • Chronic compartment syndrome

  • Peroneal tendonitis

  • Muscle herniation

Through careful assessment & gait analysis a podiatrist can identify any biomechanical irregularities which can then be treated with orthotics. A biomechanical assessment is needed to determine whether therapeutic insoles will help you. Please see the the treatments tab to find out what a biomechanical assessment involves.
